Opossum, or Didelphis Virginiena Identification The opossum, or "possum", is found in the west coast states, the Eastern and Central U.S. and throughout Florida. It is a whitish gray mammal. Adult males weigh an average of 6 to 12lbs. and females 4 to 6lbs. They reach a maximum length of 3′ including their hairless, grasping tail. Opossums are the only marsupials found in North America. The Opossum's diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grain, and trash, although the opossum's food of choice seems to be dead animals. How, When and Why They Become a Nuisance Pest Marsupials Marsupials are a group of mammals commonly recognized as pouched mammals. They give live birth, but they do not have long gestation periods like other mammals. the young are born prematurely and raised in the mother's marsupium, or pouch, in which she nurtures them until they are weaned. Central and South America and Australia have marsupials such as the koala, wallaby, wombat, kangaroo, and sugar glider. Opossums can become a nuisance for the Tampa Bay residence any time of the year. They may raid improperly sealed trash cans and pet foods left outdoors. Opossums may seek shelter in attics, crawl spaces, tool sheds, decks and porches. Opossums living in and around homes produce unwanted waste and nocturnal noise. It is not uncommon for baby opossums to die in and around homes producing even more of a problem. Damage They Cause Most damage caused by opossums occur during the winter and early spring.  They will destroy soffits, tear off shingles, damage crawl space vents and take off mushroom vent caps just to gain access to your home. Once inside they will destroy insulation and wires to modify the house to their liking. Opossum droppings pose another threat altogether. Their droppings may contain a variety of diseases harmful to pets and humans. Pinellas and Hillsborough Opossum Removal & Opossum Control Trash can raiding opossums can be deterred by fastening lids with bungee cords or other straps. Pet food should be stored in metal containers and food bowls should be brought in nightly. Opossums living in homes can be trapped or captured and relocated at least 15 miles from the property. There is not much of a concern of removing parents from babies because opossums are marsupials.
